This tour starts from a short ride across the charming town of Agios Nikolaos with the picturesque buildings, stunning se views and lake Voulizmeni, famous for its inordinate depth.
Further we will have a boat ride to the world-famous island of Spinalonga along the colorful Mirabello Bay.
The island of Spinalonga, along with the 16th century fortress located on it, has always attracted attention. Once the Venetians, who owned Crete, founded a fortress here. During the capture of the island by the Ottoman Empire in the 17th century, the Venetian garrison of the fortress was able to hold it for more than 65 years due to its powerful walls and advantageous location. But what makes Spinalonga unique are the ruined houses and buildings of the settlement that was from 1903-1957 Greece’s official leper colony.
According to the data for 2009, Spinalonga has 1200-1500 visitors daily during the summer months and is the most popular archaeological site in Crete after Knossos.
The strategic position of the rocky islet for the control and defense of Elounda harbor could not but mark Spinalonga with a turbulent history of fierce battles and much human suffering.
The final stop is at the Olive Oil Factory. A short tour of the production workshop and cellar awaits you, where tens of tons of Greek “liquid gold” are stored in giant shining tanks. You can taste pickled, salted and even candied olives, olive paste, various sweets and seven varieties of olive oil, as well as purchase your favorite products at producer prices.
